You will be the most remembered teacher.
★ Convince your students within five minutes that they can actually learn Arabic, Chinese, Czech, English or any other language. (I like to tell teacher worldwide that, if you cannot convince your student in five minutes, they will not believe this is possible even if they stay with you for a year.)
★ After sixty years, my discovery I call TPR (Total Physical Response), which I share with you, is still the fundamental and most elegant way, to acquire fluency in any language on earth (including mathematics, which is also a foreign language).
★ The concept of TPR is simple, which is why it is so powerful. (Albert Einstein commented that nature prefers the simple to the complex and the symmetrical to the asymmetrical. He continued, “If your theory is so complex that a child cannot understand it, it is probably a mistake. Keep working on it!”
★ The principle of TPR is documented with solid science as you can review in my book, Learning Another Language Through Actions, now in the 7th edition).
★ About the simplicity of TPR: Count Leo Tolstoy said this,”It is easier to write ten volumes of philosophy than to apply one principle.” TPR looks easy to apply and it is if you develop skill, which takes practice. My colleagues and I have many interesting books and games using TPR that can help you become that outstanding teacher who is remembered when others are soon forgotten.
★ Remember, 96 percent of students who start the study of a foreign language in school “give up” before making that breakthrough to fluency. The result: More than thirty states no longer require a foreign language to graduate high school. Parents would be thrilled if their children can acquire fluency in one of more languages, but based on parents’ disappointing experience in school, they concluded it is a waste of time. It was a massive amount of work for a very small gain. Personal example: After a year of high school Spanish, I can say, “ Vamos a tomar un refresco.”
If new to TPR, I recommend you begin with the TPR Starter Kit or the Super TPR Starter Kit.
Best wishes for continued success,
Dr. James J. Asher, PhD.
